The first records of Englishcombe Parish date back to the Domesday Book of 1086,
some 20 years after the Battle of Hastings pictured on the Bayeux Tapestry above.
Nigel de Gournay (half way between Paris and Dieppe) was the original tenant of
Englishcombe, Barrow and Swainswick, and his lands would almost certainly have
been earned by fighting for William the Conqueror. His son, Robert, (d1166) is believed to
have built St Peter's church in the village, and probably had his house close by.
